90 Years Old and Still Going Strong

published on 24 October 2011

The concert was publicized as a celebration of Boris Mersson’s 90th birthday. This Swiss composer and pianist was therefore allowed to choose its content. He chose to play one of his own compositions - Spiel Der Komödianten - and also two of his favourite pieces - Mozart’s Klavierkonzert D-Dur KV 537 «Krönung» and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade Sinfonische Suite Op. 35.

Boris Mersson began piano and violin lessons at the age of five. He later studied piano with Isidore Karr in Geneva and Henri Stierlin-Vallon at the Conservatory of Lausanne. He studied conducting with Hermann Scherchen in Zurich and Herbert von Karajan in Lucerne.

During his varied career, he has played in piano and chamber music concerts close to home in Switzerland and Europe and as far afield as the USA and Brazil. As a conductor he has worked in Switzerland, Austria, France, Italy and Germany. As a composer he has received numerous awards and accolades at home and abroad.

All I can say is I hope I remain so active and creative when I reach the same age.
